If you’re someone who’s always on the lookout for a good deal, you’ve probably heard about this sweet Honey (oh! not the liquid, sorry!) App Extension.
Everyone loves to save some cash, like from shopping online. Saving money feels good, no doubt about that. And most specially, earning while shopping is a pretty good deal.
For someone who wants to incorporate a frugal lifestyle, you can start by hunting for coupons and cashback deals for your most loved retail sites with the use of these free money-saving apps.
Websites such as Amazon and Ebay can only go so far in showing you the deals available. Normally, you would just google coupons, but sometimes it would take so much time and there is no guarantee that they will work.
Now that’s where Honey comes in. It’s a simple browser extension that can help you automatically find coupons, promo codes and good deals online can help you save money while shopping.
But the question is, does the Honey App really work? Or is it more trouble than it's worth? Let's find out in this 2020 Honey App Review.
What is the Honey App Extension?
Price: Free
Available in: Chrome, Safari, Edge, Opera, Firefox
Basically, Honey is a simple extension that can be installed in the browser of your choice, be it on Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or any other popular browser.
If you are not yet familiar with what a browser extension is and how it works, it's basically an add-on functionality to your browser experience.
For this, Honey just simply searches all over the internet for the best prices of your item. It helps you find some of the best coupon codes on its partnered 40,000+ sites, test them and applies one with the most savings, and viola, saves you money!
Honey extension uses a type of crowdsourced technology (similar to Waze) to find out whether coupon codes work or not.
For a bit of backstory, the founder Ryan Hudson, came up with the idea for Honey when he was ordering a pizza for his kids and was prompted to enter a coupon code during checkout.
He wanted a discount but his kids were already hungry for some pizza and he didn’t want to search around for a code as it deemed time-consuming. He then thought of how great it would be to easily automate the process of finding a coupon code, and just like that, the idea for Honey was born.
Honey Features
Honey Gold
This is Honey's free rewards program. So, not only does Honey help you save cash while you shop online, but it also helps you earn some cash as a reward for using the service.
You can redeem these points for gift cards, to purchase a new product, to donate them, or to send them to someone else.
You might ask, how do you earn this Honey Gold? There are 2 main ways to earn.
- Constantly use the app while you shop
- Refer the extension to some friends to use it as well.
The minimum Gold points required to be able to redeem these for gift cards is 1000 Gold points and you get a gift card that is worth $10 in return.
Drop list for Price Alerts
This is another nice feature of Honey. Not only does it let you save money by alerting you of a price drop on items on your list, it also saves you time.. Well, this is ideal for those who can wait.
You can set what price you want to buy at and set a time alert for when it goes on sale again.
Check out Gift Cards
This is also one of the newest additional features of the app. These are discounted gift cards that you may use when you check out. You simply buy the discounted gift card at Honey and then apply it at the select store’s website using the “pay with gift card” option at checkout. To complete your purchase, you’ll just need to enter the gift card number and PIN.
However these discounted gift cards are different from coupon codes. The latter helps you save money by taking some bucks off your purchase, while the former covers your order at checkout.
These discounted gift cards are also site and order specific and will just pop up on your browser whenever they're available. Currently, they're only available on the extension browser.
Privacy
Honey claims they never collect any personal data from you like your credit card numbers, search engine history, billing address, emails, or any other website that is not a retail site. So you can be assured that your privacy is not at risk.
Besides, you can choose whether to link your Facebook account or Google account in order to maximize utilization of the app.
Savings Finder
Definitely a great money-saving app/extension. This is the main function of Honey, to offer you the best price possible.
How does it work?
First, you will need to install the extension from your browser’s webstore, You will then be asked to create an account. Then, you’re good to go.
Now, you can just shop online like you normally would. While you shop, Honey will test out different coupons available and apply one with the best savings to your item on the selected store. Don't be discouraged if Honey can't provide one for you, not all coupon codes out there work. On the bright side, you didn't have to waste any of your time searching for one that works and Honey will always be there to find you the best deal and coupon codes every other time you shop.
Customer Service
They have an email address that you can send your inquiries and they have blog articles about their different features on their website too, so I think they have fair customer support. Although if you’re a phone person, there’s no phone support. They are however, consistently trying to improve their services to improve the user experience.
Browser Extension Vs. Mobile App
Every time you shop online with Honey installed on your desktop browser, Honey will pop up and prompt you for any available discount codes or coupons for that specific retail website or store. While on the mobile app, it lumps all stores and its available codes together into a single app. Both save your time and money.
Coupons work in a slightly different way such as when you’re on the site’s checkout page, the extension then applies the best code to the cart total. While on the mobile app, if you have items from four different stores in your cart, the app will display every available code for each individual store and then you can copy and paste the codes.
Obviously, it might take a little more time if you're on the mobile app.
Droplist works on both mobile and computer. For the Honey Gold, both allow you to earn a percentage based on the number of items in your cart.
Is Honey worth it?
Well, Honey is free to use and barely takes any time from you to use it. So, it’s definitely worth giving it a try. You have the opportunity to save and earn, so why not?

How to remove Honey extension on my browser?
If you think Honey isn't helping you in any way, just give it time or you can just simply go to your Chrome Extensions and uninstall it. It will ask for some reasons as to why you've decided to break away from them. But in the future, you can easily reinstall it. No data collected nor cost to you.
Will you recommend Honey?
Yes! Those little savings will add up and there's the occasional gift card so there’s really nothing to lose.
It was also newly acquired by Paypal, but for now, they're in the test period. I can't wait to see what other options and features it will bring now that it’s a part of the Paypal family . This poses an avenue for easier payments, especially for those who regularly use Paypal for their online purchases.
It has been integrated with Amazon too, so you can easily find the best prices for your items in your Amazon cart and can use a gift card if you wish to cash in your Honey Gold rewards.
It is very easy to use, and can really save you money and time, but I hope they'll be looking into providing wider availability in many more regions in the world like Asia.
I also like the customization tool it offers.
It's very simple. You can choose which countries you're from so honey can check all coupons and discount codes out there. You can also choose to manually input one that you have. Like in here,
I recommend this to busy individuals who have no time to search for available coupons over the internet.
It does a good job of providing a surefire way of finding tiny savings and getting you the best deals every once in a while.
There are many reviews out there on Honey, however, you can only get firsthand experience by trying it out yourself. I do hope this review has helped you make a decision to try Honey out.
A great time and money saver – Life is indeed sweet with Honey.
