Ideas to Earn Extra Money at Your Job – Over 5% Increase

24. Ask for a Raise

There are several reasons why you should ask for a raise.

Either you've grown in your current role and developed more skills that provide more value to the company or the market value of your role is higher than what you make.

As long as you believe that your value to the company outweighs what you're being paid for it then do not be afraid or reluctant to request a raise at your job.

Asking for a raise is normal and companies generally aren't opposed to the idea because they also want to pay fair value for your work and don't want you to go.

So go ahead and ask for more money for your work. It's easy to check on websites like Glassdoor and salary.com to know what your job's market value is.

25. Develop More Skills relevant to your Job

Companies like to see growth in their employees because it brings more value to the company.

Building a skill that's in demand and relevant to your current role could be the leverage you need to demand more money at your job or apply for a different, higher-paying role within your company.

26. Apply for a Promotion

As with most money-making opportunities, taking a leap is often required.

If you've been in a role for a while and you believe you're ready to take on higher responsibilities or have the skills required for a higher position, then do not wait another minute to revamp your resume and request to be promoted to that position.

Do not wait around for someone to recognize your good work and consider you for a promotion, instead build your case and go for it!

27. Go Back to School

Going back to school to get either a bachelor's degree or an advanced degree can lead to a higher earning potential.

According to The Hamilton Project, the average bachelor's degree holder earns approximately $1.19 million over the course of their career, more than double the $580,000 in lifetime earnings for those with a high school degree.

Also, based on data collected by SmartAsset, a professional with a Master's degree can earn almost $15,000 more than one with only a bachelor's degree.

However, evaluate properly if this the right path for you. For instance, if your job doesn't place much value in an advanced degree then it might not be the route to go.

Also, consider the cost of going back to school, how much more money you can potentially get for it, and how long it'll take before you start benefiting from it financially.

28. Bring in Business for Your Company

Check with your company to see if they reward employees with a commission on any new business, contract, or client an employee brings into the company.

This can be a good way for you to make money other than your salary if you have a strong network and connections.

It's easy to take advantage of this and help your company land new businesses and earn a sweet commission.

29. Do a Great Job to Get a Higher bonus

The end of the year is usually an exciting time for some employees because it's bonus time! Companies generally reward bonuses based on performance during the year.

So, all you need is to do an excellent job during the year and snatch up that big bonus check.

How to Earn Extra Money with Your Money – >5% More

Now we've come full circle. You're doing some work and making money from it. How do the rich get richer? By using continuously growing whatever money they already have.

It's fine and dandy to have $10,000 as extra cash, but it's more worthwhile to multiply that $10,000 by putting it to work.

This is the basic concept of investing – making your money work to bring in more money.

30. Invest in the financial markets

Stocks, bonds, derivatives, mutual funds, and index funds are all securities that are traded in the financial markets.

You would only invest in any of these securities on the premise that you believe they would appreciate in value over time.

People saving for retirement typically invest in the financial markets to take advantage of compound interest from the time of investments to the point of taking out the funds.

Ideally, you shouldn't blindly invest in the financial markets to avoid losing your money.

I've dabbled with stocks, forex, ETFs, and index funds in the past few years, but I make sure to do tons of research to figure out the best ways to invest my money (I definitely do not want to gamble it away).

Robo advisors like Wealthfront take away all the hassle of doing research if that's not your thing. Let's face it, reading the quarterly earnings of a company can be quite a snore.

With Robo-advisors, you just have to tell them how much risk you're willing to take and how long you have till retirement, and boom…your investment portfolio is on its way.

31. Invest in a business

You might decide to finally try your hands at that business idea that's always been on your mind. Or you could deliberately set out to find a business you want to get started with.

Or, you could be an investor in someone else's business and take a percentage of the profits.

Whatever it is, the goal is to put your money into a business idea or opportunity that you believe has growth potential and enjoy the profits.

32. Reinvest into your business

Bear with me for a second,

If 1 person can produce 2 apples in a day,
then, 2 people can produce 4 apples in a day and
10 people can produce 20 apples in a day.

What's the point of the grade 2 math I put you through? It's that scaling can directly increase productivity.

So, your business is growing steadily and you're making a profit from it. Rather than pocket the profits, go ahead and reinvest that money into your business that will automate your processes, increase efficiency and productivity.

33. Invest in the housing market

As long as humans would need shelter to survive, the housing market is an evergreen opportunity to invest in.

Buy a house and watch it appreciate in value over time. Or buy a house that needs some work, renovate it and flip it for a profit.

Don't have a large capital? Invest in real estate investment trusts (REIT), which are companies that invest in income-producing real estate.

Fundrise, an online platform for investing in real estate, is a good place to get started with as little as $500.

34. Become a Personal Lender

It's easy to lend money at an interest rate directly to individuals. However, if you're giving out an unsecured loan, it's difficult to go after any collateral if the borrower defaults.

Peer-to-peer lending sites, like the Lending Club and Prosper, allow you to spread out your loan to multiple borrowers. That means if you have $1000, you can invest $50 each across 20 borrowers.

Some investors have reported seeing up to 12% returns.

35. Pay Down Your Loan Principal

This is more like spending money now to save money in the long run. With loans, interest is calculated on the remaining loan balance each month.

By making additional payments towards your loan principal, you're directly reducing how much you'll pay on interest overall.

As an example, consider a 30-year fixed mortgage loan of $200,000 at a 4.125% interest rate and a monthly payment of $969/month.

If you make an additional $100 a month, you will save $28,089 and pay off the loan 4years and 11 months earlier. That sounds appealing, doesn't it?

Check out this extra payment calculator to find out how much you can save.

  3. Richard

I am very impressed with your compilation of how to earn extra money in this article. It goes to show that as long as we are hardworking, we will not starve. I particularly like the TaskRabbit, not that it appears as the first item in your article. But I didn’t know there is such a portal for people to earn extra money like this. Unfortunately, TaskRabbit is not available in my country and with Covid-19, I’m not sure whether this can be done anymore, or perhaps it is even more important. But the pre-requisite I guess is that the people in that country must be quite affluent to afford this kind of service.

But from the list, I think the Affiliate Marketing and Publishing a Kindle eBook are considered the passive income streams. So to me, that feels like the best but it obviously will take a lot of effort. Thanks for writing this article. I can bookmark this to remind myself of the many ways to earn income!

    • Mosun Solebo

That’s great Richard. You can also look at freelancing websites like fiverr. There are a lot of jobs to do there that don’t require much specialized skill. And yes, creating a passive income stream does require some upfront work.

  4. Paolo

This is a comprehensive list of things we can do to earn extra cash. And this comes in handy, specially during this quarantine and combined with the fact that we need extra cash. I would like to begin trying affiliate marketing and becoming a freelancer. I feel I may have a chance to succeed in these two.

    • Mosun Solebo

      That’s great Paolo!

  5. Misael H

Wow! These are all very useful pieces of information! You opened my eyes to many options I could take to earn me some extra cash! I’m kind of (but at the same time not too much) surprised that you didn’t mention high-yield dividend investments. Such as an ETF like SPHD. But then again, those require a lot more time and even high-yielding investments only give pennies and require a lot of investment. Regardless though, these are awesome ideas. I’ve bookmarked your site because I like the information you hold a lot! Thank you so much for providing all these ideas

    • Mosun Solebo

Hi Misael, you’re right about the High-yield dividend investments. For the nature of the post, I only gave high level ideas like “investing in financial markets”. There will surely be a post coming soon on the different investment securities that are available. So watch out for it:)

      Great comment.

      • Misael Herrera

Thank you for your reply Mosun. I was wondering if I could get in touch with you some time soon. I really like the way you’ve built your site and I’d like some pro tips from someone who definitely seems to have their website well figured out. You can email me at herrera.misael@rocketmail.com, maybe we could co-op in the future! Also, I know I sound like a spam but I promise that I’m not haha this is really me trying to build a network.

        Best Regards,

        Misael H.
